The next Coach in our 2023 profile series is our Boys U12-1 Coach, Damien Peverill!
In 2023 Damien will be heading up the Boys U12-1, making it his third year coaching at Moonee Valley. He started coaching the under 9s in 2019 followed by a couple of years off before coaching again in 2022.
Damien became a football coach because he wanted to be an influential part of my kid’s lives and coaching his son, Noah, seemed like a good way to be able to do that.
Damien, or ‘Pev’, as he is often called was extremely fortunate to play at Essendon FC for 8 years. Playing finals and Anzac Day games at the MCG were memorable, but it was the travel around Australia, particularly to the Tiwi islands through football that was the biggest highlight.
When it comes to coaching philosophy, his main message to the boys last year was
‘You win well, and you lose well’ meaning be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. For Pev, this goes hand in hand with the players respecting their teammates, as well as their opposition.
In 2023, his focus will be to help the boys continue to develop their fundamental footy skills like marking, kicking, handballing, tackling etc, as well as their game awareness and understanding. For Pev, this is important for getting them ready to play under 14s, and for higher levels such as combined sides and rep squads like Calder Cannons in the future.
One of Pev’s favourite quotes, or at least what he noticed a podcast one day, is
’Be the best part of someone’s day’ and he hopes that when the boys come to training and games that he can be that person who forms part of their best day or week.
We cannot wait to see our under 12 boys in 2023! Good Luck for the year to you all, you are safe with Coach Pev.
